20 named fellows of the 14th Lopez Jaena Journalism Workshop on Media and Gender Sensitivity

Twenty journalists and journalism educators have been named fellows of the 14th Lopez Jaena Journalism Workshop on Media and Gender Sensitivity from October 23 to 29 at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC).

The fellows are Grace Albasin (Philippine Daily Inquirer),Noel Sales Barcelona (Pinoy Weekly), Filemon Baturiano (Bikol Mail), Teresa Campos (Radyo ng Bayan-Tuguegarao City), John Anthony Concepcion (ABS-CBN News Online), Donna Demetillo (Women’s Feature Service), Agnes Dimzon (The Visayas Examiner), Jose Alfonso Garalde
(Aquinas University-Legazpi City), Romano Cortes Jorge (Manila Times), Freddie Lazaro (Manila Bulletin), Liezel Longboan (Igorota Magazine-Baguio City), Jennifer Manongdo (Manila Bulletin), Thelma Dumpit-Murillo (House of Representatives), Portia Palma (Philippine Information Agency), Alan Pelayo (University of Northeastern Philippines-Naga City), Ilang-ilang Quijano (Pinoy Weekly), Cepheus QuiƱones (Radyo Natin Zambales), Vincent Jan Cruz Rubio (Silangan Shimbun), Ismael Talili (Cagayan de Oro College) and Miriam Torrecampo (People’s Tonight).

The fellowship covers board and lodging. For the duration of the workshop, the fellows will be billeted at the University Hotel inside the UP Diliman campus.

The training team for this workshop is composed of distinguished journalists, academicians and gender rights advocates. They are Prof. Luis Teodoro, Dr. Georgina Encanto, Dr. Carolyn Sobritchea, Dr. Thelma Kintanar, Dr. Glecy Atienza, Dr. Sylvia Claudio, Ms. Yvonne Chua, Prof. Danilo Arao, Prof. Lourdes Simbulan, Prof.
Patricia Adversario, Prof. Ben Domingo, Prof. Odine de Guzman and Atty. Carol Ruiz-Austria.

The topics to be discussed in the workshop are gender concepts; causes of gender bias in media and advertising; sexism in media; sexism in language and writing; gender analysis of ethical guidelines for media practice; legal aspects of gender-sensitive reporting; gender sensitivity in news reporting and feature writing; and investigating gender-related issues. There will also be a panel
discussion with gender rights advocates from the UP Center for Women’s Studies (UP CWS), Gabriela Women’s Party,Reproductive Health Action Network, Pro-Gay and Isis.

The fellows will submit an indepth report on a gender-related issue at the end of the workshop which will be analyzed in terms of form and content. A panel of judges from the training team will choose the best article written during the workshop.

The workshop, organized by the UP CMC in coordination with the UP CWS, focuses on media and gender sensitivity in observance of the 100th year of the feminist movement in the Philippines. The Asociacion Feminista Filipina, the first "formal organization" of women, was founded on June 30, 1905 by Concepcion Felix. Last April 29, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Proclamation 622 declaring 2005 the centennial year for the Philippine feminist
movement.
